I love when customers contact me to paint their own furniture, and I show up to their house and see a great piece! This customer, who was my 6th grade teacher in the mid 90’s:), wanted her buffet in black and heavily distressed. Since those were the only two criteria I had to follow, I knew General Finishes Milk Paint Lamp Black was the perfect fit!
I brushed on one sparse coat of Lamp Black after cleaning and lightly sanding the surface. This product dries pretty quickly, so I was able to start distressing soon after I painted. Using fine and medium grit sanding sponges, I sanded the whole piece but mainly concentrating on the corners and edges. I sanded until I saw what I thought was enough wood coming through the paint. Simple as that! I brushed two coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin after I cleaned up all of the dust from sanding/distressing. And that’s all she wrote! The lighting conditions weren’t ideal in the spot where Lacy had to take pictures from, but they still turned out really great! Better than I could’ve done with my phone!!
While I think that my own personal style would be a smooth, non-distressed piece, I do really like this style as well! It was so neat to paint for a former teacher. This lady was easily one of my favorites in school. I admired her so much, so I was certainly honored that she asked me to paint for her. I also painted her kitchen cabinets which I’ll save for another post:) Thanks for stopping by!!

I would like to ask the top coat you used, is it the “High Performance Polyurethane Water Based Topcoat”. So beautiful. Thank you for shearing the idea.

Hi there, yes that’s what I used. I believe the sheen was Satin.

Do you know how much paint this required? I want to use the same paint for a buffet and china cabinet. Do you think I could do both with the quart size?

Yes, a qt and a half did my entire kitchen and I did 3 coats. Milk paint goes very far.
