There was an awesome brick fireplace in our previous house that I loved SO much, but it was so dark!! I’m not kidding when I say it sucked all of the light out of the whole room! Keep reading to see how to paint a brick fireplace.
There seems to be so much controversy over painting brick. My stance is, if you don’t like the original brick, PAINT IT! Yeah, it’s perminant, but so what.
In my opinion it’s permanently better after paint!
If you love your brick, by all means, leave it alone. I didn’t hesitate for a second deciding to paint this fireplace:)
What You’ll Need For Painting Brick
- 1 1/4″ nap roller cover
- 3″ paint brush
- Loxon Masonary Primer
- Top coat paint in desired sheen. (I chose to use Sherwin Williams Super Paint Satin in Oyster White for this project.)
5 Steps To Paint A Brick Fireplace
- Vacuum the entire surface using a brush attachment
- Using 1 1/4″ nap roller cover, roll surface with Loxon Masonary Primer
- Brush primer along all edges using 3″ paint brush
- Let dry for 24 hours
- Repeat the same process using your paint and color of choice!
After painting the brick, the whole house felt 100% brighter and more fresh! I was so pleased with the result!
I hope you’ve been inspired to give your dated fireplace an upgrade if you’ve been wanting to paint it.
See you soon, friends!

I am in the process of painting over the 3rd dark sucks the life out of a room fireplace. It also had dark wood cabinets on either side with hardware from the 70’s and a dark wood and brass ceiling fan. Like you it is all going to be light, bright and beautiful when I am done.
