I recently was able to get my hands on this Lancia dresser from Kent-Coffey and I am OBSESSED. It was in such great condition- I couldn’t believe it!
I’ll admit, I did feel a bit guilty for painting over this wood because it was really pretty and in great condition. But, I knew the curves in those drawers would knock my socks off if they were glossy.
And I was right, it does 🙂
This might be my favorite piece to date!
Choosing A Paint From Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant
I had plans to paint it and give it a new style, but I was procrastinating on working on it. But motivation hit when I came across this gorgeous navy blue paint color. The color is called Navy 1798 by Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant. I just love the gloss this navy paint has- it works perfectly with this dresser!
All the heart eyes over here, I can hardly stand it.
How I Used High Gloss Paint To Paint My Dresser
Now looking at the before and after, can you even believe the difference? It’s like night and day! It doesn’t even look like the same dresser.
Here is a quick play-by-play on how I made this Kent Coffey dresser so gorgeous.
Clean and Prep The Dresser
Before you do anything, it’s very important to actually prep the furniture so you can get a nice even coat of paint.
I actually filmed an entire video on how to do just that. Check out this tutorial!
Painting The Dresser In Navy 1798 From Fine Paints of Europe
Now, once you have cleaned and prepped the dresser, you can go ahead and start priming and painting!
Two sprayed coats of oil-based primer and two coats of finish with an insane amount of sanding between all coats resulted in this beauty. Even though the paint from Fine Paints of Europe is one of the glossiest paints I have ever used, I still think it is sure important to cut and polish a paint finish.
Lucky for you I also wrote a whole tutorial just for that!

Last Minute Touch Ups
After I finally finished painting the dresser in navy blue, I noticed a few dust particles landed in the paint before it fully dried and I was so annoyed! Luckily, it was really easy to buff out by wet sanding and polishing the enamel paint finish.
Total lifesaver hack!
The last thing I needed to do to really leave this dresser “complete” was figure out what to do with the furniture hardware. I noticed it had these beautiful brass handles (and y’all know I love an old-school brass handle). SO, I decided to give all of the brass hardware a quick polish and it made all the difference in the world!
This dresser was a labor of love but I think it was totally worth it!
I hope you were able to find everything you were looking for when it comes to painting furniture with high gloss paint.

Did you wet sand the drawer faces, even the curved ones?
Kayla says

I love the combo of the painted dresser and the soft wallpaper. What wallpaper is it?

It’s an incredible piece and I’m inspired to give this a try with a vintage stereo console.
Thanks for sharing your work

Hi Kayla, absolutely gorgeous…. I am just venturing into high gloss finishes after years of painting furniture and not even attempting it.
I have a question about something else though. I have the pretty much identical dresser with super high quality construction and beautiful wood. I’ve looked in the drawers and in the back and there is no makers mark that I can see. Do you know of any other way to identify it? I did another one very similar of the same high quality and it was a Henredon. But clearly marked in top drawer.
Sorry so long winded. And thank you so much for sharing your work.
Kara
PS… I’m practicing on a few pieces with Benjamin Moore Advance before I go all in.
Kayla says
That’s so frustrating when there’s no mark! I don’t know of another way to identify it:( I have an amazing campaign style desk that is super old and very well made…not a single mark on the entire thing. Made me CRAZY!! I’d just really love to know who made it and when!

Based on these photos I ordered this paint color from Fine Paints of Europe in the hybrid. I don’t know if you used the oil but I didn’t want to spring that on my painter. I can’t wait to see it in my bathroom. Don’t feel guilty. The piece looks gorgeous. It is still wood and the wood is still there under the paint if anyone ever wants to restore it to stain in the future. Wood purist kill me. Good call. I can’t thank you enough for making it easy to choose the right navy.

I clicked on the Navy post because i was thinking of redoing some end tables for my basement. I want to do Hawaiian Bark cloth and contemporary furniture. I cant stop saying WOW to this!!! Since I am using end table that will have drinks on them, i was wondering if it was a smart choice. Maybe getting glass tops? Wow!!!!!

That~~is mind blowing beauty. I thought, that the original dresser was as nice as it could look, and it was living dangerously to do anything to it. Boy was I wrong. I don’t know when I’ve seen anything so beautiful. You went completely out of furniture finishing and into ART.

That is gorgeous!!!

Hmmm….I GOOGLED for a high gloss painter and your name popped up. What awesome work you do!!! But I also asked for one in Naples, FL Are you there? I don’t know how to find a local painter who uses the Fine Paints of Europe and is so skilled at it! I’d love to hear from you about my project.
Thanks,

Go to the Fine Paints website and look under the “certified painters” tab to see if there’s a painter in your area! Best of luck, Lis!

Hi Kayla, I love the look of your pieces that were painted with Fine Paints of Europe. I also use their product. Even though the paint is expensive and the process of using oil paint is tedious it’s so worth it!! I’ve never seen a more luxurious look in painted furniture and front doors.
Kayla says
I completely agree!
